Oklahoma Aviation History Darr School & WW2 Aviation Memorial Plaza - Did you know that DARR School was one of six training facilities built by Americans to train British pilots to fly bombers in World War II? Did you know that Ponca City citizens purchased War Bonds to pay for “Miss Ponca City” a B-17 bomber that we never got to see because it was shot down in combat? These are just a few facts we hope to share with visitors and local residents with this WWII memorial project. American Flyers Memorial - On 22 April 1966, an American Flyers Corporation Lockheed 188 "Electra" crashed on landing at Ardmore, Oklahoma. This is a memorial to the 83 who perished in what is still Oklahoma's worst commercial accident. The Bombing of Boise City - An article from the 19 July 1943 issue of Time Magazine on the accidental "practice" bombing of the city in Oklahoma's Panhandle. Tulsa Air and Space Museum - Where the past and future meet to inspire today’s visitors. Experience Tulsa’s rich history in the aerospace industry by exploring 19,000 square feet of exhibit space and educational displays. Aviation and Space Exhibits at the Omniplex - Celebrate Oklahoma's aerospace heritage with the Aviation and Space exhibits at Omniplex. With one of the nation's premier collections, these exhibits take you through the history of aviation and space. Stillwater Airport Memorial Museum (no Internet site) - The museum includes pictures and artifacts from 1918, when the first plane landed in Stillwater, to the present day. Visitors will find a variety of historical pictures, information and displays of the "Stillwater Municipal Airport," the international Flying Farmers," the "OSU Flying Service," the "Stillwater Air Force," the OSU "Flying Aggies," Wiley Post's visit and other exhibits in the museum and around the terminal. Open Sundays 1 to 5, any other time by appointment. 2020-1 West Airport Road, Stillwater, OK. 405-372-7881 Wiley Post Heritage of Flight Center - The Wiley Post Heritage of Flight Center with the Curtiss-Wright Wiley Post Hangar, will become an active aviation event center for promoting General Aviation and to further the Legacy of Wiley Post. The completed Hangar is the first phase in the development of an aviation adventure which will include several aviation and transportation museums all under one roof; a 1920's -30's style air terminal, flying airplanes, fly-in hotel, dinning, shopping and an adjacent golf course. |
