F-86F 52-4741 and JM-1 (B-26J Invader) 77172 were involved in a mid-air collision on 5 March 1954 at 15,000 feet MSL two miles SSE of Kirtland AFB, NM. The F-86 had just departed Kirtland enroute for Robins AFB, Georgia. The JM-1 was transiting the area on a VFR flight plan. The weather was clear with 60 miles visibility. The investigation concluded that the pilots had failed to see each other to avoid the collision.
Veteran wreckchaser Robb Hill took me to see this site in 2007 during my visit to Albuquerque.
Bell P-39Q Airacobra 44-3082 crashed 29 January 1945 in a valley north of Las Vegas, Nevada. The pilot, who bailed from the aircraft and was not injured, was on a routine gun camera mission when his engine began to run rough and oil pressure was lost. The investigation concluded that an oil line failed, and caused oil to be expelled into the tail cone.
McDonnell Douglas F-4D Phantom II 66-7594 and 66-7617 collided on 28 August 1979 while maneuvering to intercept a third Phantom as an Air Combat Maneuvers (ACM) training mission. The crew of Retail 22 was able to eject successfully; the crew of Retail 21 ejected, but sadly were killed upon ground impact.
